Building U.S. Credit History as a Non-Resident — How an ITIN Made It Possible
Wei T. · Tech Professional, Singapore
Problem
Wei moved to the U.S. for work but wasn't eligible for an SSN. Without any U.S. credit history or a Social Security Number, every credit card application was declined. He needed to establish credit quickly — for renting an apartment, leasing a car, and eventually applying for a mortgage.
Approach
Wei qualified for an ITIN as a non-resident alien with U.S.-sourced income. Once issued, we guided him on which banks and credit unions accept ITINs in place of an SSN and what documents to bring when applying.
Outcomes
- ITIN obtained in 61 days
- Approved for a secured credit card at a major U.S. bank
- Credit file opened with all three major bureaus
- Upgraded to an unsecured card within 12 months
- ITIN accepted for apartment application and car lease
One of the most overlooked uses of an ITIN is credit building. For immigrants, visa holders, and foreign nationals spending time in the U.S., establishing a credit history is critical for everyday financial life.
The problem: most credit applications ask for a Social Security Number. If you don't have one, the application is automatically declined — even if you have significant income and assets elsewhere.
Several major U.S. financial institutions accept an ITIN in place of an SSN for credit products. These include secured credit cards, credit builder accounts, and some auto loans. Once you have a card that reports to the bureaus, your credit file is established and you begin building history.
Wei's path after getting his ITIN: he applied for a secured credit card using his ITIN, used it for regular expenses and paid in full each month, and after 10 months received an upgrade to an unsecured card. He later used his credit history to qualify for an apartment lease without a co-signer.
Banks known to accept ITIN include Bank of America's secured card program, Wells Fargo, and certain credit unions and community banks. An ITIN doesn't replace an SSN for all purposes, but for credit building, it opens the door that would otherwise be closed.
Overview
Wei had no U.S. credit history and no SSN. With his ITIN, he was approved for a secured credit card, opened a credit file with all three major bureaus, and upgraded to an unsecured card within a year.
