How Long Does an ITIN Take in 2025–2026? Processing Times and What Affects Them

ITIN applications take 7–11 weeks depending on when you apply and where. Here are the current IRS processing times, what causes delays, and how to plan around deadlines.

Plan for 7–11 weeks from the date the IRS receives your application.

That single sentence answers most of the questions, but the details matter — because the difference between 7 weeks and 11 weeks can mean the difference between filing your taxes on time and needing an extension.

Current IRS Processing Times

As of May 2026, the IRS is processing Form W-7 applications within 11 weeks of receipt. Outside of peak season, the typical timeline is shorter:

When You ApplyIRS Processing Time
Outside tax season (May – December)7 weeks
Tax season (January 15 – April 30)9–11 weeks
Applications mailed from overseasUp to 11 weeks

These are from the date the IRS receives the application — not from the date you mail it. Add 1–2 weeks for mail transit if you're sending from outside the U.S.

The 2025 Government Shutdown: What Happened and Where Things Stand Now

During October and November 2025, a U.S. federal government shutdown caused significant staffing reductions at the IRS. Applications submitted during that period sat for 14–20 weeks.

As of May 2026, the IRS has worked through most of that backlog. Standard processing has resumed. If you submitted during the shutdown and haven't received your ITIN yet, contact the IRS at 267-941-1000 to check your application's current status.

What the Processing Timeline Actually Means

When the IRS issues a "7 week" estimate, here's what's happening during those weeks:

  1. Application is received and date-stamped
  2. Form W-7 is reviewed for completeness and correct reason code
  3. Identity documents are examined
  4. The attached tax return (if included) is checked for formatting
  5. An ITIN number is assigned
  6. The CP565 notice (ITIN assignment letter) is mailed to the address on the application

You receive the CP565 at the mailing address you provided. If you used a CAA, we forward it to you as soon as we receive it.

There's no online tracking system. You either wait for the CP565 to arrive or call the IRS after the standard processing window has passed.

What Makes Processing Take Longer

1. Tax Season Volume

January through April is when the IRS processes both the bulk of annual tax returns and a spike in ITIN applications. Staffing doesn't scale to match volume perfectly, which is why tax-season applications take longer.

If your ITIN isn't tied to an imminent filing deadline, applying in May–December gets you the faster 7-week timeline.

2. Application Errors

Errors restart the clock. Common ones that cause rejection:

  • Name on the W-7 doesn't exactly match the passport
  • Wrong or missing reason code
  • Missing exception documentation
  • Expired passport submitted
  • Old form version used

In 2025–2026, the IRS has been rejecting incomplete applications outright rather than asking for corrections. If your application comes back rejected, you resubmit and the processing period starts over from that point.

3. Missing Documents

If the IRS needs additional documentation (e.g., your submitted document didn't clearly prove foreign status), they send a notice. Your processing clock doesn't pause — it restarts when they receive your response.

4. International Mail Transit

Applications mailed from overseas add 1–3 weeks before the IRS even starts the clock. Factor this in when planning around a deadline.

How to Track Your Application

The IRS has no online tracking portal for ITIN applications. After the published processing window has passed, you have two options:

Call the IRS:

  • U.S.: 800-829-1040
  • International: 267-941-1000
  • Hours: Monday–Friday, 6 AM – 11 PM Eastern

When calling, have your name, date of birth, country of birth, and the approximate date the application was submitted.

Contact your CAA: If you applied through a Certified Acceptance Agent, we can follow up with the IRS on your behalf and get current status updates. This is often faster than going through the general IRS phone line.

The One Exception: FIRPTA Applications (10-Day Processing)

For foreign sellers of U.S. real estate who submit Form W-7 simultaneously with Form 8288-B (the FIRPTA withholding certificate), the IRS processes the ITIN application within approximately 10 business days.

This fast-track exists because FIRPTA withholding decisions must be made at or before closing — there's no time for standard processing. If you're selling U.S. real estate, this timing is the one to plan around.

Planning Around Common Deadlines

April 15 Filing Deadline

If you need an ITIN to file a tax return by April 15, apply by early January. Tax-season processing runs 9–11 weeks, so a January submission puts you right at the deadline.

If you can't guarantee that timing, file Form 4868 for an automatic 6-month extension (moves deadline to October 15). Don't write "ITIN Applied For" on a return and submit it — the IRS won't accept a return with a missing TIN.

Shopify/Stripe Account Verification

No official deadline, but frozen accounts create business disruption. Apply as soon as you know you'll need it, not when the platform's hold notice arrives.

Real Estate Closings

Plan for the 10-business-day FIRPTA fast-track. Submit Form 8288-B alongside Form W-7 at least 2 weeks before closing to have the ITIN in hand with a margin.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I request expedited processing?

Standard applications can't be expedited. The FIRPTA exception (Form 8288-B + Form W-7) is the only situation where fast-track processing applies.

The IRS says they received my application — why haven't I heard anything?

The IRS doesn't send acknowledgment notices for W-7 submissions. You only hear from them when the ITIN is issued (CP565) or if there's a problem with the application. No news during the standard processing window is normal.

My ITIN still hasn't arrived after 12 weeks. What should I do?

Call the IRS at 267-941-1000 and inquire about your application status. If they can't locate it, they may ask you to resubmit. If you have tracking confirmation that it was received, give them that information.

How long is the ITIN valid after I receive it?

Indefinitely — as long as you use it on a U.S. federal tax return at least once every three consecutive years. ITINs unused in 2022, 2023, and 2024 all expired December 31, 2025.

Apply Early

The ITIN processing time is fixed — there's nothing that makes it faster once the application is in. The only lever you control is when you apply. Earlier is better.

ITINSERVICES submits applications within days of completing the intake process and passport verification. We don't add unnecessary wait time on our end.
